Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Secures Employment for Returnees from South Africa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has launched a strategic initiative to secure jobs for Ghanaian citizens returning from South Africa.

This effort seeks to support the successful reintegration of returnees by connecting them with stable employment opportunities within the local economy.

Business owners and CEOs are encouraged to participate in this national project by offering roles to those arriving home. The ministry is currently coordinating these efforts through its specialized Delivery Unit, which is dedicated to assisting returnees as they rebuild their lives in Ghana.

How many job opportunities have been secured so far?

The initiative has already successfully secured 120 job openings thanks to the support of patriotic Ghanaian entrepreneurs. The Delivery Unit, led by Alexander Grant Ntrakwa, serves as the primary liaison between business leaders and the returning citizens.

  • The ministry views the welfare of its returning citizens as a top priority.
  • Business owners are invited to contact the Delivery Unit directly to offer employment.
  • The ministry emphasizes that it deeply values and cherishes every citizen returning to the country.
  • This job placement program is part of a broader government strategy to provide social support for returnees.

While the job placement program continues, the High Commission of Ghana in South Africa has announced a temporary suspension of new registrations for the voluntary repatriation exercise. This pause, effective from June 2, 2026, allows officials to process the massive backlog of applications.

Key facts regarding the evacuation progress include:

  • Over 1,500 Ghanaians have officially registered for the repatriation programme.
  • A total of 297 citizens have already been successfully evacuated to Ghana.
  • Approximately 600 additional citizens are expected to arrive in the coming days.
  • The High Commission is currently working with Home Affairs authorities to verify and screen existing applications.
  • The repatriation programme was initiated as a direct response to xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians and other African nationals in South Africa.

The High Commission assures the public that this suspension is not the end of the programme. Once the current applications are processed, officials will communicate the date for the next phase of registration. In the meantime, the government continues to focus on both the physical safety of its citizens and their long-term economic stability upon their return.
