Ghana Immigration Service Repatriates 105 Foreign Nationals Following Human Trafficking Raid

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) recently concluded a major intelligence-led operation that resulted in the repatriation of 105 foreign nationals. This operation, which targeted commercial sex premises in Asankragwa, successfully rescued 112 individuals suspected of being victims of human trafficking.

The raid took place on May 20, 2026, under the command of Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Kwabena Adjei. It serves as a stark reminder of Ghana’s ongoing commitment to dismantling transnational criminal networks that exploit vulnerable populations.

How did the Ghana Immigration Service conduct this rescue operation?

Following the initial raid in Asankragwa, the GIS launched a thorough screening process to identify the victims. The initial group consisted of 110 Nigerians, one Beninese citizen, and one Cameroonian citizen, all of whom were female and aged between 12 and 38.

  • The victims were initially transported to a holding facility in the Greater Accra Region for detailed processing.
  • The Anti-Human Smuggling and Trafficking in Persons (AHSTIP) unit conducted follow-up investigations.
  • These investigations identified seven suspects and confirmed 105 of the individuals as genuine victims of trafficking.
  • The National Operations Department coordinated with relevant embassies and community representatives to ensure a secure return.

Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI) Samuel Basintale Amadu has issued a strong warning to foreign nationals to strictly comply with all Ghanaian immigration and criminal laws. He emphasized that the Service remains fully dedicated to protecting vulnerable people from exploitation.

The GIS is actively strengthening its partnerships with other security agencies to combat the following threats:

  • Human trafficking and the exploitation of individuals.
  • Migrant smuggling rings operating within Ghana’s borders.
  • Various forms of transnational crime that undermine regional security.

This operation highlights the importance of intelligence-led policing in maintaining public safety. By working closely with international diplomatic partners, the GIS ensures that repatriations are conducted safely and humanely, while simultaneously holding the identified trafficking suspects accountable under the law.
