The state emergency machinery has pushed its operations into maximum gear to tackle multiple environmental and safety crises. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully rescued four hundred and seventy-nine people over a intense three-day emergency operational period.
The heavy rescue campaign spanned from Sunday, June 28, to Tuesday, June 30, 2026, across Accra, Tema, and surrounding neighborhoods. While emergency workers saved hundreds of lives from severe floods, fire outbreaks, and building collapses, five casualties were sadly recorded.
The heaviest rescue operations took place within the flood-ravaged residential zones of the capital region following continuous downpours. At Tse-Ado Last Stop, a joint team including the Fire Service, NADMO, and the Police Marine Unit rescued one hundred and five trapped residents.
Similarly, by the early morning hours of Tuesday, rescue teams concluded an extensive evacuation exercise within the hard-hit Adabraka to Odawna corridor. Operatives used tactical gear to pull more than three hundred citizens out of rising waters, though four individuals tragically lost their lives to the currents.
Beyond the widespread flash floods, firefighters battled several dangerous fire incidents sparked by structural and mechanical failures. At Labadi Kojo Sardine, an overcharged solar panel battery sparked a commercial fire that partially destroyed a metal container.
A more severe inferno occurred at Asutuare Junction, where four separate fire tenders battled a blazing fuel tanker. The massive explosion completely destroyed the heavy haulage vehicle, resulting in one fatality and leaving another individual with severe injuries.
The intense three-day period also recorded a major structural failure that almost turned into a mass casualty event. A large four-storey residential building completely collapsed at Tabora Number Six in Accra on Monday.
Fortunately, all twelve occupants noticed structural warning signs and evacuated the building before the entire block gave way. Meanwhile, in the Tema Region, firefighters responded to twenty-three urgent incidents, including fallen trees, while search teams continue looking for a female trader swept away near the Tema Community One Market.
