GRA Interdicts Four Customs Officers Over Attempted Diversion of Transit Cargo Trucks

The state mechanism for revenue protection has taken a highly firm disciplinary step to curb corruption at our border entry points. The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has officially interdicted four customs officers over their alleged involvement in an audacious attempt to divert heavy transit cargo into the local Ghanaian market.

The swift administrative action follows deep intelligence investigations into a massive cross-border smuggling ring intercepted earlier this year. By freezing the duties of the implicated staff, the state is sending a very clear warning that compliance loopholes within the Customs Division will no longer be tolerated under the current tax administration.

The legal and disciplinary crisis began during an overnight preventive enforcement operation conducted back in February 2026. A joint team of Customs preventive officers and National Security operatives successfully intercepted eighteen large commercial trucks packed with thousands of boxes of imported food products along the Dawhenya to Tema motorway.

The shipping documents accompanying the massive fleet declared that the goods were transit cargo traveling from Togo through the Akanu border post with a final destination of Niger. However, security investigators discovered that the drivers were actively offloading the heavy consignments within Ghana to evade paying substantial state import duties and local taxes.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the Commissioner-General of the GRA, Anthony Sarpong, confirmed that the four border officers who processed the initial documentation have been immediately suspended from active duty. The targeted individuals are currently facing intense internal disciplinary boards to determine the depth of their culpability.

The GRA boss emphasized that the state remains fully committed to supporting legitimate trading businesses while maintaining an iron clad stance against internal revenue leakages. Any officer found guilty of bypassing established customs rules for personal enrichment will face the full weight of internal administrative procedures alongside potential criminal prosecution.

In a highly strategic move to turn a border crime into a national benefit, the central government has decided not to let the massive food haul rot in state warehouses. Under the direct instructions of the Ministry of Finance, the entire confiscated cargo has been officially confiscated and reallocated to support a critical social intervention initiative.

The massive haul, which contains over forty-four thousand individual packages of cooking oil, tomato paste, and spaghetti, is being transported to the National School Feeding Programme. Primary school pupils across the country will now benefit directly from the seized contraband while the state works to strengthen its digital border tracking networks.
