Our hardworking cocoa farmers are the real backbone of the Ghanaian economy but they rarely get what they deserve. They sweat in the hot sun every single day to bring us foreign exchange while politicians sit in air conditioned offices making big promises.
A prominent university lecturer has finally spoken the painful truth about how the state treats these important agricultural workers. Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato is a Senior Fellow at Africa Policy Lens and a respected Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana. He boldly stated that apart from teachers and nurses the government has woefully failed to keep its promises to cocoa farmers.
This powerful statement drops right when the government plans to introduce the brand new COCOBOD Bill to Parliament. The state claims this fresh legislation will finally protect farmers by guaranteeing them a minimum of 70 percent of the gross Free On Board price. Officials believe this legal move will automatically adjust local producer prices to match global market rates.
Monitoring these global commodity prices requires the same sharp technical analysis used when trading the XAU USD gold market. Farmers essentially need to watch international charts just to understand if they will earn enough money to feed their families next season. It is completely unfair that the people producing our wealth must worry so much about price volatility and empty political statements.
The proposed bill also aims to bring the entire COCOBOD institution under the direct strict supervision of the Finance Ministry. It further demands that we process at least half of our raw cocoa beans locally instead of exporting everything. These ideas sound absolutely beautiful on paper but we all know implementation remains our biggest problem in this country.
Ghanaian cocoa farmers are tired of endless grammar and fancy legislative documents that do not put real physical cash in their pockets. We genuinely hope this new bill will not become another empty campaign promise just to win rural votes. Our farmers deserve massive respect and immediate financial stability because without them our entire economy will simply collapse.
