The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has officially launched the National Horticultural Seed Roadmap to transform Ghana’s vegetable sector. Unveiled in Accra on September 17, 2026, by Deputy Minister John Setor Dumelo, this strategic three-to-five-year framework aims to eliminate counterfeit seeds, boost local seedling production, and give smallholder farmers access to high-yielding planting materials.
I always joke that planting fake or bad seeds on your farm and expecting a bumper harvest is like putting plain water into a car’s fuel tank and expecting to drive to Kumasi! IMO, fixing our seed system from the root is the single smartest move government can make to save local farmers from endless frustration.

Why Quality Seeds Hold The Key To Ghana’s Agricultural Growth
Why are agricultural experts and policymakers focusing heavily on high-performing vegetable seeds and seedlings across the country? For years, a significant number of Ghanaian vegetable farmers have relied on informal channels, saved seeds, or uncertified imported planting materials that yield very poorly.
According to official MoFA data, tomato farmers currently produce an average yield of just 8 tonnes per hectare, far below international benchmarks.
With the launch of the Ghana Tomato Self-Sufficiency Initiative (GHATSI) targeting 400,000 tonnes of annual production, farmers urgently need improved, climate-resilient seed varieties to bridge our 300,000-tonne domestic tomato deficit.

I remember how heartbreaking it was watching local tomato farmers in Ada and Navrongo lose entire harvests due to bad seed stocks, so seeing government step in with a clear seed roadmap brings massive relief to agricultural communities.
How The 3-to-5 Year Strategy Will Work On The Ground
How will MoFA, research institutions, and the private sector implement this new roadmap to reach everyday farmers in rural communities?
Supported by partners including the Netherlands Embassy, the roadmap outlines ten strategic priority areas built around local entrepreneurship, strict certification, and variety development.

Fighting Counterfeit Seeds: The National Seed Council will enforce strict digital tracking and quality assurance standards to clear fake seeds off agro-dealer shelves.

Training & Commercialization: Local seedling nurseries will gain technical training and input financing to supply healthy sprouts directly to vegetable growers.
FYI, buying genuine certified seeds might cost a few extra cedis at first, but the bumper harvest at the end of the season makes every single pesewa totally worth it!
This national horticultural seed initiative represents a major leap forward for Ghana’s agricultural modernization drive. By linking high-quality seed production to guaranteed buyer markets and structured financing, our local vegetable industry can finally reach its full commercial potential.
