My brother, road construction in Ghana can sometimes bring drama that even Hollywood directors cannot script. During a recent site inspection on the Kumasi Konongo Bypass, the contractor handling the project made a very surprising claim.
He pointed fingers directly at activities around Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei Duah’s Second Chance Church for the constant failure of a critical road section.
The contractor told Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza that unauthorized access routes created around the church premises are destroying the drainage system. According to his briefing, all the cross drainages built in that area have silted up again because of heavy human movement and poor water management. Even though workers had to raise the sinking road by nearly two meters using heavy boulders, the persistent waterlogging issues refuse to go away.
Minister Agbodza quickly stepped in during the tour to ensure that the situation gets fixed before any asphalt laying begins. He directed local authorities and the project team to manage access routes properly around the church area to protect the multi million cedi investment. The minister also assured residents and property owners along the Accra Kumasi Bypass corridor that the government will pay all outstanding compensations now that workers are back on site.
Everyone in Kumasi and beyond is hoping these corrective measures will finally hold up so commuters can enjoy smooth travels. When public infrastructure meets religious activities, proper coordination remains the only secret to preventing millions of cedis from washing down the drain. Let us keep our fingers crossed and see if the contractor can finish the asphalt works without any further drama.
