President John Dramani Mahama has held discussions with the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on strengthening trade and investment cooperation between Ghana and other Commonwealth member states.
The meeting took place on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, on the sidelines of the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.
The discussions focused on trade, investment and opportunities to deepen economic cooperation among Commonwealth countries.
The engagement was aligned with this year’s CHOGM theme, “Accelerating Partnership and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth”, which seeks to promote stronger partnerships, attract investment and advance shared economic development.
Focus on trade and investment opportunities
The meeting provided an opportunity for Ghana to explore ways of strengthening its participation in the global trading system and expanding economic partnerships.
Discussions also highlighted the importance of cooperation among Commonwealth countries in creating investment opportunities and addressing barriers to international trade.
The WTO plays an important role in facilitating international trade by providing a platform for negotiations, resolving trade disputes and promoting a predictable global trading environment.
Ghana’s engagement at CHOGM
President Mahama’s meeting with Dr Okonjo-Iweala forms part of Ghana’s wider diplomatic and economic engagements at the Commonwealth summit.
The 2026 CHOGM, being held from November 1 to 4, has brought together leaders from 56 Commonwealth countries to discuss trade, investment, sustainable development and shared global priorities.
Ghana’s participation also provides an opportunity to strengthen economic partnerships, attract foreign investment and promote opportunities for local businesses to access international markets.
The discussions with the WTO Director-General underline the importance of multilateral cooperation in advancing Ghana’s trade and development ambitions.
