Manchester United are reportedly considering disciplinary action against defender Lisandro Martínez after he openly criticised the quality of the club’s squad.
According to journalist Laurie Whitwell, Martínez is not the only Manchester United player who shares concerns about the club’s current situation.
Speaking to CBS, the Argentine defender questioned whether the team has enough quality to compete in the UEFA Champions League.
“This is NOT a Champions League quality squad,” Martínez said.
He also expressed disappointment with the club’s recruitment. According to the defender, Manchester United should have signed more players to strengthen the team and improve competition within the squad.
“We had a fantastic season last season… and now we expected more from the top, from the people upstairs, to bring in more players to compete,” he told CBS.
Martínez also pointed to the transfer activity of other clubs. He believes Manchester United needed to make more signings to keep pace with their rivals.
“Many teams have signed a lot of players as well!” he said.
The defender further complained that the club continues to face similar problems every season. He argued that speaking honestly about these issues is necessary for change to happen.
“Every season is the SAME… we talk about the same things. If we don’t say the truth then NOTHING will change,” Martínez said.
However, Martínez did not place all the responsibility on the club’s leadership. He admitted that the players must also improve their performances.
“I think us, the players, we can do more, but it’s also important to build a strong squad to be ready for these kinds of nights,” he explained.
He also maintained that Manchester United do not currently have the same squad strength as some of Europe’s leading teams.
“For me, we do NOT have the best squad at the moment compared to other top teams,” he added.
The reported possibility of a fine comes amid concerns about Manchester United’s recruitment and their ability to compete consistently at the highest level.
Martínez’s contract runs until June 2027, although the club has an option to extend it until 2028.
For now, the reported disciplinary action remains unconfirmed as a final decision. The situation has raised further questions about the club’s recruitment plans and whether its squad has enough quality to meet its ambitions.
