The intense conversation surrounding the sudden deportation of internet celebrity Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has taken a highly political turn. A well-known private legal practitioner in Ghana, Martin Kpebu, has revealed that the country missed a major opportunity to use the high-profile cyber fraud suspect as legal leverage.
Speaking on TV3’s current affairs programme, The KeyPoints, Kpebu argued that state officials executed the international transfer way too quickly. He explained that instead of simply rushing the young socialite onto an outbound flight to the United States, Ghana should have delayed the entire legal process to secure a major diplomatic exchange.
The logic behind the proposed delay centers entirely on holding powerful public officials accountable to local courts. Kpebu clarified that he has absolutely no objection to Abu Trica facing the full wrath of the law in America for his alleged eight million dollar artificial intelligence romance scams.
However, the vocal lawyer believes the timing of the deportation was completely wrong and worked against our national interests. Kpebu insisted that the state should have held onto the cyber fraud suspect until the United States government agreed to hand over Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, who is currently facing intense legal scrutiny back home.
The developing legal standoff has triggered a much wider debate among local commentators regarding how international treaties are enforced. Many citizens are asking why ordinary young Ghanaians are rounded up and flown out of Kotoka International Airport within days, while powerful political elites manage to stay abroad for months without any local disruption.
Ken Ofori-Atta has remained outside the jurisdiction for a long period, even as the Office of the Special Prosecutor continues to push for his return to answer corruption-related questions. By synchronizing the two cases, Kpebu argues that Ghana could have proved to the international community that our local state laws apply equally to both rich politicians and famous internet celebrities.
The reality on the ground shows that fetching the former finance minister will be an incredibly difficult task for local prosecutors. Recent media reports revealed that a United States court actually granted Ken Ofori-Atta lawful permanent residency status following a successful immigration petition.
This fresh immigration setup, paired with a heavy defense team featuring high-profile American defense attorneys, makes a standard extradition process extremely complicated. Because the United States system naturally protects its own residents, Ghana has lost significant diplomatic standing, making Kpebu’s original idea of a simultaneous player swap look like a highly intelligent strategy that slipped right through our fingers.
