27 th September 2026 – The world is beginning to see Africa in a different way. On September 4, 2026, the
United Nations General Assembly adopted the “Correct the Map” resolution by 164 votes to one, with six
abstentions, encouraging the use of map projections that more accurately represent the true size of the
world’s continents, particularly Africa.
The vote highlights a broader message: Africa is not only large on the world map, but its global
importance is growing.
The resolution is more than a discussion about maps. It highlights the importance of seeing Africa
accurately—not only geographically, but also in terms of its economic potential, resources, people and
growing global influence.
Africa has the world’s youngest and fastest-growing population, creating significant potential for future
economic productivity. The continent also possesses major reserves of critical minerals, including cobalt,
copper, platinum and gold, as well as substantial agricultural and renewable-energy potential. The UnitedNations notes that Africa holds around 30% of the world’s critical mineral reserves.
The African Continental Free Trade Area is helping create a larger integrated market, while expanding
mobile money and fintech are supporting digital commerce and financial inclusion across many countries.
