Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson has launched an anti-bullying school tour in the United States following the death of 15-year-old Ghanaian student Javits Frimpong in New York.
The initiative seeks to raise awareness about bullying in schools and encourage students to speak up when they experience or witness harassment.
Blackson began the campaign at John Bartram High School in Philadelphia, his former school, where he engaged students on the effects of bullying and the importance of creating a safe learning environment.
The comedian has also encouraged people to recommend other high schools he should visit as he takes the campaign to more students across the United States.
Blackson Shares His Personal Experience
Blackson has previously spoken about his own experiences with bullying as an African immigrant growing up in the United States.
He recalled facing hostility during his school days and described how those experiences affected him.
The comedian’s decision to engage students is intended to turn those personal experiences into a message of awareness, support and prevention.
He wants young people to understand that bullying should not be ignored and that students experiencing harassment should seek help from trusted adults and school authorities.
Javits Frimpong’s Death Renews Bullying Concerns
The campaign follows the death of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian student who was fatally shot while travelling to school in the Bronx, New York.
His death has raised concerns among Ghanaians in the United States and brought renewed attention to student safety and reports of bullying.
Although concerns have been raised about bullying allegedly experienced by the teenager, a direct connection between those reports and the fatal shooting has not been established publicly.
Blackson’s school tour is drawing attention to the need for schools, parents and communities to take bullying seriously and provide support for students.
Through the initiative, the comedian hopes to encourage young people to reject harassment, respect one another and help create safer schools.
