Suspended Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Zakaria Abdulai has sued investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni and Multimedia Group Limited for GH¢2 million over alleged defamation. The suit was filed at the High Court in Accra on October 16, 2026.

The case concerns publications about allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students at the school. Abdulai argues that the publications damaged his reputation and is asking the court to award him compensation.

According to the reported court claims, Abdulai is seeking damages and a perpetual injunction to stop further publications he considers defamatory. An injunction is a court order that can prevent a person or organisation from taking certain actions.

The lawsuit brings fresh attention to the controversy surrounding the Obuasi SHTS headmaster and the work of investigative journalism in Ghana. However, filing a defamation case does not automatically mean the journalist or media organisation has committed a legal wrong.

Investigations and Court Proceedings Remain Important

The Education Ministry previously directed Abdulai’s suspension pending investigations into the sexual misconduct allegations. The ministry also requested police investigations, according to a report by Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. These are separate processes from the defamation suit.

The court will have to consider the claims and any defence presented by the parties before reaching a decision. As of the reports available on October 22, 2026, the defamation allegations had not been determined by the court, and a response from the defendants was not included in the report detailing the suit.

For now, the case raises important questions about reputation, responsible reporting and accountability. The outcome will depend on the evidence and legal arguments presented, not simply on the allegations made by either side.
