Ghana’s Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, should be recognised for her leadership and not judged only by her gender. This is the message from Julius Kwame Anthony, who says the Vice President should not be expected to speak first whenever issues about women and girls come up. He believes such expectations overlook her wider duties as a leader of the country.

In his statement, Anthony argues that Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang deserves respect as both an individual and the Vice President of Ghana. He questions why people should expect her to appear before the cameras on every issue involving women and girls simply because she is a woman.

Women’s rights and girls’ welfare are important issues. However, a female leader can contribute to many other areas, including education, healthcare, the economy and national development. Her gender should not limit the issues she can lead or speak about.

The phrase “breaking the glass ceiling” describes overcoming barriers that prevent women from reaching top positions. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang’s rise to the vice presidency marks an important moment for women in Ghanaian politics.

Anthony argues that reducing her identity to simply “a woman” goes against the purpose of that achievement. His point is that women who reach high office should have the same freedom as men to focus on different national issues without being tied mainly to gender discussions.

Respect Her Office and Her Full Authority

The debate is not about ignoring the challenges women and girls face. Rather, it is about treating female leaders fairly and recognising the full range of their responsibilities.

Anthony’s message calls on the public to see Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as more than a symbol of women’s progress. She is also the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, with duties that extend across the country. Respecting her means recognising her full role and allowing her leadership to speak for itself.
