Power Supply to Some Locations in the Greater Accra Region to be Interrupted on August 23- GRIDCo

Power Supply to Some Locations in the Greater Accra

Greater Accra residents, get your power banks charged and your backup plans ready! The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has officially announced a massive 15-hour power supply interruption scheduled for Sunday, August 23.

The lights will go off from 3:00 a.m. early in the morning right through until 6:00 p.m. in the evening. This scheduled blackout is necessary to enable technical teams to safely carry out vital emergency replacement work on a damaged high-voltage transmission tower along the Volta-Achimota 161kV transmission line near Ashaiman.

The tower suffered critical structural damage after a fuel tanker exploded underneath the line, threatening the stability of the entire regional power network. GRIDCo engineers completed the first phase of repairs earlier this month, but this second phase will fully restore the line’s strength and safeguard against sudden, unannounced blackouts.

Working alongside the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), GRIDCo is coordinating load management to manage the impact across affected communities. Neighborhoods expected to experience power outages include key zones in both Accra West and Accra East, including Kaneshie, Adabraka, Jamestown, Tesano, Madina, Cantonments, Nima, and Osu.

GRIDCo has expressed regret over the severe inconvenience this day-long outage will cause to households, churches, and local businesses. Officials urge everyone living in the affected zones to make necessary preparations before 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, as crews work around the clock to finish the maintenance smoothly and return stable electricity to the capital.
