President Bola Tinubu Secures Historic APC Nomination for 2027 Presidential Race

The internal political landscape of Nigeria has reached a definitive milestone ahead of the next major electoral cycle. Incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially emerged as the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress.

He secured a commanding victory in the ruling partyโ€™s nationwide primary election, amassing nearly 11 million votes across the country.

The comprehensive results, collated from all 36 states alongside the Federal Capital Territory, cement his absolute dominance within the party. The outcome leaves his sole challenger, Stanley Osifo, with a highly marginal minority of the total votes cast.

Overwhelming Dominance Across Regional Strongholds

The figures were officially declared at the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre located in the capital city of Abuja. State governors from 31 states alongside senior party coordinators presented the direct primary outcomes to the Presidential Primary Election Committee, which was chaired by former Senate President Pius Anyim.

President Tinubu scored 10.99 million votes across 8,809 electoral wards nationwide, effectively shutting out his opponent. In the South-West geopolitical zone, which is a traditional stronghold for the ruling party, the President recorded massive numbers. He polled 814,988 votes in Lagos State, 322,485 in Ogun, and 181,996 in Ondo. Conversely, Osifo secured only scattered, minor figures within the zone, including zero votes in multiple states.

The northern territories delivered equally historic margins for the incumbent leader. Kaduna State produced one of the highest individual tallies of the exercise, delivering 618,914 votes for Tinubu, while Kano State followed closely with 500,852 votes. Katsina State added 467,003 votes to the landslide total.

The North-Central region mirrored this momentum, with Benue State turning in 374,787 votes and Kwara State contributing 310,990 votes. Osifo failed to capture any momentum in the Federal Capital Territory, where the President cleared all 36,103 votes.

Southern Zones Solidify the Nationwide Victory

The South-East and South-South regions, which historically present highly competitive voting patterns, returned substantial figures for the incumbent administration. Imo State led the eastern block with 582,960 votes for Tinubu, while Enugu State delivered 383,382 votes.

In the oil-rich South-South delta region, Delta State turned in 407,646 votes, while Akwa Ibom State recorded 389,197 votes in favor of the President. At the final conclusion of the national collation exercise, Tinubu emerged with an official aggregate total of 10,999,967 votes, while Osifo garnered a nationwide total of 16,504 votes. Logic dictates that overcoming such an immense statistical gap is virtually impossible in modern party politics.

Three Factual Insights on Nigerian Electoral Systems

  • The All Progressives Congress utilizes direct primary options to allow every registered card-carrying party member across all local government wards to vote directly for their preferred candidate.
  • Direct primaries are designed to promote decentralized grassroots political participation and reduce the influence of elite delegate shopping during national conventions.
  • Under the current Independent National Electoral Commission guidelines, political parties must conclude all internal primary conflicts and formally submit candidate rosters months before the general election.

Setting the Stage for the 2027 General Election

Securing a landslide internal party victory is a vital first step, but unifying a massive country requires sustained economic and social engineering. President Tinubu must now pivot from internal party politics to addressing broader national challenges, including inflation, fiscal restructuring, and security optimization.

The opposition parties will undoubtedly analyze these primary election turnouts as they structure their own coalition strategies. For now, the ruling party stands firmly behind its chosen flagbearer, preparing its machinery for what promises to be a highly consequential national campaign.
