Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong has been appointed Acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), taking over at a time when Ghana’s sports sector is facing renewed public attention.
His appointment follows the removal of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah from the position of NSA Director-General amid controversy surrounding an alleged visa facilitation arrangement linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Prof. Osei Sarpong is an Associate Professor of Physical Education and Sports at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), where he also serves as Dean of Student Affairs.
His academic background is closely connected to sports, physical education and athlete development, giving him experience in areas relevant to the work of the National Sports Authority.
Who Is Prof Emmanuel Osei Sarpong?
Prof. Osei Sarpong has built his career around physical education, sports and academia.
At UEW, he has been involved in teaching, research and administration, while also contributing to sports-related activities within the university.
His appointment therefore brings an academic and sports-management background to the leadership of the NSA.
He also previously served on the NSA Governing Board before the board was dissolved by President John Dramani Mahama in September 2026.
Takes Over After Yaw Ampofo Ankrah’s Removal
Prof. Sarpong assumes the acting role following the removal of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, whose tenure as NSA Director-General came under increased scrutiny in recent weeks.
The controversy included allegations surrounding a visa facilitation arrangement connected to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Minority in Parliament had called for action against the former NSA boss over allegations that significant amounts of money were collected from individuals seeking assistance with travel and visa arrangements for the tournament.
The allegations remain subject to investigation. The NSA has denied authorising any visa facilitation or money-collection scheme connected to the World Cup.
Challenges Await the New NSA Boss
Prof. Sarpong takes charge at a time when the management of Ghana’s sporting facilities remains an important public issue.
The condition and management of major sporting venues have attracted concerns from football fans, athletes and other stakeholders.
The new acting Director-General will therefore have to oversee the Authority’s operations while working within a changing leadership structure.
His appointment also comes as Ghana continues to prepare for major sporting activities and seeks to improve the administration and development of sports across the country.
For many stakeholders, the change at the NSA represents another development in the government’s efforts to address concerns surrounding the country’s sports administration.
Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong will now lead the Authority in an acting capacity as attention turns to the future direction of Ghana’s sports sector.
