Two Dead as Heavy Flooding Devastates Tema Communities

Two people have died following severe flooding caused by Monday’s heavy rains in the Tema Metropolis, as emergency responders battled multiple incidents across several communities.

The victims have been identified as Elizabeth Quansah, a one month postpartum mother, and Obeng Cudjoe, the father of a newborn baby. Their bodies were recovered from the Waterland area in Tema New Town after floodwaters swept through parts of the community.

The Tema New Town Police Command has transported the bodies to the mortuary as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The torrential downpour triggered widespread flooding across Tema and nearby communities, disrupting daily life, damaging infrastructure and leaving many residents stranded. Roads became impassable in several areas as floodwaters inundated homes, businesses and public spaces.

According to the Tema Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), communities including Tema, Prampram, Dawhenya, Afienya and Appolonia were among the hardest hit by the storm.

Emergency response teams were deployed across the affected areas to assist trapped residents, rescue those in danger and respond to various weather related emergencies.

Despite the difficult conditions, firefighters from the region’s nine operational fire stations responded to 23 emergency incidents within 24 hours.

The incidents included six separate fire outbreaks, all of which were successfully brought under control before they could spread further or cause significant damage to surrounding properties.

In addition to flooding and fires, strong winds accompanying the storm uprooted seven trees across different parts of the metropolis. Several of the fallen trees blocked major roads, creating traffic disruptions and posing safety risks to motorists and pedestrians.

Firefighters worked throughout the day to remove the fallen trees, clear blocked roads and restore safe movement for commuters.

Authorities said the flooding significantly disrupted transportation and commercial activities in several communities, with residents struggling to move around as roads remained submerged for hours.

Emergency officials have continued assessing the extent of the damage while urging residents living in flood prone areas to remain vigilant during the ongoing rainy season.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns about flooding in parts of the Greater Accra Region, where heavy seasonal rains frequently overwhelm drainage systems and expose vulnerable communities to significant risks.

Officials have encouraged residents to avoid walking or driving through flooded roads and waterways during heavy rainfall, warning that fast moving floodwaters can become life threatening within minutes.

The Ghana National Fire Service also advised the public to report emergencies promptly to enable rescue teams to respond quickly and reduce the risk of further casualties.

As clean up operations continue across the affected communities, local authorities are expected to assess infrastructure damage and implement measures aimed at reducing the impact of future flooding incidents.
