US Seeks Changes to Ghana’s $109m Health Compact – Mahama

Mahama Overhauls National Security Secretariat

The United States government is seeking to revise its proposed $109 million health compact with Ghana following concerns that led to its rejection by Cabinet.

President John Dramani Mahama disclosed this during a citizens’ engagement in Goaso in the Ahafo Region.

According to the President, the US government has requested further discussions on the agreement, including the possibility of amending or removing clauses that Ghana considers objectionable.

The proposed health compact is valued at $109 million and is intended to support cooperation between Ghana and the United States in the health sector.

However, some provisions in the original agreement raised concerns within the Ghanaian government, leading Cabinet to reject the proposal in its existing form.

President Mahama’s disclosure suggests that discussions could resume as both countries explore whether the disputed terms can be revised to address Ghana’s concerns.

The proposed amendments could involve changes to specific clauses or the removal of provisions that Ghana considers unacceptable. The exact clauses under discussion have not been detailed in the information provided.

The development comes as Ghana and the United States continue to engage on the terms of the proposed agreement and the future of their health cooperation.

Any revised compact would need to address the concerns that led to the initial rejection before it could move forward.

The outcome of the discussions will determine whether both governments can reach an agreement acceptable to both sides.

For now, the proposed $109 million health compact remains subject to further engagement, with attention on whether changes to the disputed clauses can pave the way for a new agreement.
