My brother, social media has been hot this week because of an old video of Apostle Arome Osayi that resurfaced online. In the clip from a past sermon, the clergyman claimed he met Jesus on a Tanzanian beach and asked for miracle powers. According to his testimony, he was instructed to send five million naira as a sacrifice to a pastor before later seeing an angel heal five people.
This strange narration quickly caught the attention of popular Nigerian activist VeryDarkMan, who openly criticized the story. The social media critic did not spare words, questioning the logic behind miraculous demands and pointing fingers at the pastor’s family relocation to the United States. VDM argued that preaching about Nigeria’s spiritual destiny while moving abroad creates a double standard for ordinary citizens facing economic hardship.
Other prominent voices quickly stepped into the ring to defend the man of God from heavy public mockery. Senior ministers like Apostles Michael Orokpo and Emmanuel Iren urged the public to show restraint and stop insulting spiritual leaders. They insisted that mocking Christian authorities crosses a dangerous line, regardless of how controversial or unusual a particular sermon sounds to external observers.
The entire saga has opened up a deeper national conversation about the real value of religion amidst heavy poverty and unemployment. While defenders view massive churches as spiritual anchors protecting society, critics argue that excessive commercialization distracts citizens from demanding proper government accountability. Many young people are now asking whether religious devotion is actually transforming daily life or just creating false hopes.
Here in West Africa, this debate shows how deeply faith influences our political and social survival strategies. Whether people choose to support modern prophets or question their financial motives, the tension between blind trust and logical reality remains wide open.
