My brother, things are really changing in our Ghanaian churches every single day. A popular local preacher known as Prophet John Papa Jesus has caused serious online debate.
During a recent Sunday service, he mounted the pulpit and dropped a heavy directive for all his church members. He boldly announced that he has increased the church offering rate to twenty percent.
To make matters worse for people holding tight coins in their pockets, he added a strict financial condition. The man of God declared that he will accept only offerings of GH¢50 and above. According to him, bringing small amounts like one or two cedis to church shows disrespect to the creator. He even argued that if someone can easily buy expensive smartphones, dropping a tiny coin in the basket is totally unacceptable.
Social media users across Ghana have reacted with a mixture of shock, laughter, and pure anger since the video dropped online. Some internet commentators noted that current economic hardships make it difficult for ordinary citizens to survive, let alone pay high offerings. Others jokingly asked whether heaven now operates a strict currency exchange or minimum bank balance policy. Meanwhile, loyal church defenders claim that running modern church auditoriums with air conditioning requires serious money.
This dramatic announcement brings back memories of similar controversial statements made by other popular local pastors in the past. Religious leaders often face heavy public scrutiny whenever their financial demands clash with the financial struggles of everyday worshippers. Critics strongly believe that setting fixed financial floors puts unnecessary pressure on poor families seeking spiritual comfort. Yet, controversial prophets continue to pull huge crowds who hang onto their every word despite the heavy public backlash.
At the end of the day, church administration remains a personal matter between spiritual leaders and their dedicated followers. Whether members will happily comply with this new twenty percent rule or look for alternative places of worship remains to be seen. As for now, the internet will keep talking about this unique church policy until another funny trend takes over.
