Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has described Nsawam Medium Security Prison as a “five-star prison,” citing new facilities and improvements aimed at modernising the country’s correctional system.
The comment has drawn attention to ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, security and living conditions at one of Ghana’s major prison facilities.
The improvements are intended to support prison administration, enhance healthcare delivery and create opportunities for inmate rehabilitation.
New Facilities at Nsawam Prison
Among the developments at Nsawam Prison are a new remand prison block, a poultry facility and a hospital annex.
The remand block is designed to accommodate up to 800 inmates and could help ease pressure on existing accommodation. The poultry facility is expected to support agricultural activities and provide inmates with practical skills that may be useful after their release.
The hospital annex is also intended to improve healthcare services for prison officers’ dependants and people in the surrounding community.
Security upgrades, including surveillance systems, form part of the broader efforts to improve operations and strengthen safety within the facility.
Focus on Rehabilitation and Inmate Welfare
Modern prison management involves more than keeping inmates in secure custody. Access to healthcare, skills training, education and rehabilitation programmes can help prepare inmates for their eventual return to society.
The new facilities at Nsawam are expected to contribute to these objectives, although their impact will depend on how effectively they are completed, maintained and used.
Muntaka’s description of the prison as a “five-star prison” reflects his assessment of the improvements. It is not an official classification of the facility.
The developments also highlight the broader challenge facing Ghana’s correctional system: improving infrastructure while addressing overcrowding, healthcare needs and the welfare of both inmates and prison officers.
