he Accra Turf Club has strongly condemned a sudden and forceful takeover of its race course at Borteyman. Eyewitnesses reported that nearly 200 armed men arrived on Saturday, August 22, causing total chaos and complete property destruction.
The club revealed that nine bulldozers and an excavator flattened essential facilities across the sprawling site. Approximately 100 horse stables, administrative offices, tracking railings, and utility systems were turned into rubble within hours.
Jockeys were ejected from residential quarters, while horses were dragged out of stables. Some individuals even dismantled roofing sheets and valuable equipment from the wreckage to sell.
Responding officers from the Lakeside Police Station confronted leaders of the group. However, those leading the demolition claimed they had official land authorization, though they failed to present any valid court order on site.
The Accra Turf Club traces its heritage back to 1923, holding deep historic roots in Ghanaian sports. Government relocated the club to Borteyman under a formal 2006 agreement after redeveloping their previous land in central Accra.
A 2005 court order granted the Lands Commission power to demarcate 46.64 hectares for the club. Officials insist this legal backing makes the ongoing invasion completely illegal and unlawful.
With millions of dollars in damages, the leadership is urgently petitioning state institutions and security agencies. They demand a thorough investigation and swift legal action to halt the destruction and preserve this cultural landmark.
