Former Black Stars forward Dominic Adiyiah has opened up about a painful incident during his early playing career at Feyenoord Academy Ghana. The 2009 Under 20 World Cup Golden Shoe winner revealed how club decision makers prevented him from traveling with his teammates for an international tournament in France.
Adiyiah recalled that during the 2006/07 Ghana Premier League season, Feyenoord selected several talented young players for a major European showcase. The traveling squad included future international stars like Harrison Afful, Ernest Asante, and Solomon Asante.
However, just days before the team departed for France, club officials suddenly diverted Adiyiah to South Africa. Management told the young striker that SuperSport United wanted to assess him for an immediate transfer.
Adiyiah suspects that Feyenoord leaders engineered the sudden trip to keep him away from European scouts in France. He believes management feared that a stellar performance in France would attract bigger European clubs and complicate their transfer negotiations.
The trip to South Africa turned out to be a complete disappointment. Adiyiah spent only one day training in South Africa before officials flew him straight back to Accra, by which time Feyenoord had already landed in France.
The 2009 World U20 MVP confessed that he remains unsure whether the late legendary coach Sam Arday initiated the plot or simply executed board directives. An official named George handled his travel documents for the sudden South African journey.
This frustrating ordeal convinced Adiyiah that his future lay far away from the Gomoa Fetteh academy. Shortly after the incident, he secured a move to Heart of Lions, where his explosive goalscoring form eventually earned him a dream transfer to European giant AC Milan.
