African football fans have reason to celebrate as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially reversed its decision to hold the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years. On Thursday, October 29, 2026, CAF’s Executive Committee unanimously agreed to restore the tournament’s traditional two year cycle. The announcement brings an end to months of uncertainty over the future of Africa’s biggest football competition. For Ghanaian football fans, it also means the excitement, national pride and fierce rivalries that come with AFCON will return more regularly.
Why CAF Has Restored the AFCON Two Year Cycle
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe explained that the decision followed a review of the earlier plan to move AFCON to a four year schedule. CAF had intended to introduce a new Africa Nations League, which would take place every two years and replace AFCON in that cycle. However, the proposed competition would need several years to generate the financial resources required to support African football. CAF therefore decided that restoring the traditional AFCON schedule better serves its 54 member associations and African players, including those playing for clubs outside the continent. <Cite refs={[“turn107083search0″,”turn107083search1”]}/>
2027 AFCON and Upcoming Tournament Dates
The next AFCON will take place in 2027, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda jointly hosting the competition. CAF has also announced 2028, 2031 and 2033 as the scheduled years for subsequent editions. There will be no AFCON in 2030 because that year will feature the FIFA World Cup. The revised schedule gives African football another opportunity to maintain the tournament’s traditional place on the international football calendar.
For Ghana, the return to a two year AFCON cycle will keep the Black Stars and their supporters looking forward to more continental football action. The competition also provides opportunities for African players to represent their countries and showcase their talents to the world. Motsepe says the decision aims to protect and promote African football while supporting its long term development. One thing is certain: AFCON is not just about lifting the trophy. It is also about national pride, unforgettable football moments and the passion that brings millions of Africans together.
