Afenyo-Markin claims that NADMO provided baked beans and noodles to flood victims

The ongoing political debate surrounding national disaster management has taken a highly dramatic turn on the floor of Parliament. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin has raised serious concerns over the quality and nature of relief items being distributed by the National Disaster Management Organisation to local communities hit by recent heavy downpours.

The parliamentary confrontation follows massive downpours that caused significant property damage and displaced thousands of families across the capital. While affected residents are crying out for critical survival support, state officials are facing intense scrutiny over their emergency procurement choices.

Speaking directly to the house on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the Effutu Member of Parliament criticized the state rescue agency for its recent field activities. Afenyo Markin alleged that emergency officials were spotted distributing baked beans and instant noodles to displaced households within Nima and Accra New Town.

The lawmaker expressed visible shock at the choice of provisions, questioning the logic of handling a major national crisis with quick snacks. He argued that using state emergency funds to purchase canned beans for families who have lost their entire kitchens is completely out of touch with reality.

The parliamentary leadership emphasized that communities battling severe floodwaters require substantial food items to survive the aftermath of the disaster. Afenyo Markin noted that affected persons urgently need major food staples like bags of rice, maize, and cooking oil to feed their children.

Beyond immediate nutrition, the Minority Leader noted that the state must prioritize supplying heavy comfort items like blankets and mattresses to families sleeping in temporary structures. Providing instant noodles to someone whose entire bed is soaked in rainwater does not solve their immediate shelter crisis.

The controversy has triggered fresh demands for a full administrative audit into how disaster management resources are utilized. The opposition leader questioned the official procurement processes behind the canned food selections, demanding a transparent breakdown of the expenditure.

Furthermore, lawmakers are pushing the central government to provide direct financial packages aimed at helping local market women and small scale entrepreneurs restore their ruined businesses. True disaster management requires long term economic restoration rather than a temporary supply of processed foods.
