Declare a State of Emergency If More Rain Hits, Bawumia Urges Government

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s 2028 presidential candidate, has urged the government to consider declaring a state of emergency if weather forecasts predict heavier rainfall in the coming days.

Warning that Ghana must take swift, coordinated action to handle the worsening flood crisis, Dr. Bawumia noted that recent downpours have already caused widespread havoc across the country. He made these remarks on Tuesday, June 30, while visiting several communities in the Greater Accra Region devastated by Monday’s torrential rains.

“What is worrying for me is the forecast of even more rain to come,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “If more rain is expected, I believe the government should also consider declaring a state of emergency so that we can deal with this crisis in that specific manner.”

The NPP flagbearer called for a strictly non-partisan national response to the crisis. He urged the government to immediately mobilize engineers, hydrologists, and disaster management experts to develop both urgent relief and sustainable, long-term infrastructure solutions.

“This is a massive problem for the country,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized. “We have to bring all our energies and talents together regardless of political party because this affects all of Ghana. Let us unite for the nation and solve this problem once and for all.”
