President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate release of GHS 300 million from the Contingency Fund to finance urgent flood response and mitigation projects across hard-hit regions of the country.
The presidential directive follows a wave of severe flooding across Accra and several southern communities, triggered by hours of intense, torrential rainfall.
According to a state release issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, the funding will be split equally into two intervention areas:
- Immediate Relief: GHS 150 million is dedicated to direct aid, emergency supplies, and rehabilitation for displaced individuals and devastated communities.
- Long-Term Mitigation: The remaining GHS 150 million will fund structural adjustments and flood mitigation measures to safeguard these areas against future downpours.
To support ground efforts, President Mahama has ordered the immediate deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service. The military and police will work alongside the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other primary emergency response teams to accelerate ongoing search, rescue, and relief operations.
The directive comes shortly after President Mahama conducted an aerial assessment tour of the most severely impacted zones to review the destruction firsthand. Assuring affected citizens of the government’s swift intervention, the President emphasized that state resources are being fully mobilized to protect lives and secure vulnerable infrastructure.
