Chale, the football world is officially weeping today. Lionel Messi has finally dropped the curtain on his international career with Argentina. The legendary player made the emotional announcement on his Instagram page after more than twenty years of absolute magic.
When the Greatest of All Time speaks, everybody listens. FIFA wasted absolutely no time to honor the thirty nine year old superstar on X. The global football body simply posted a sweet 3 word message saying Thank you, Leo 🇦🇷 along with a beautiful photo tribute.
This short message perfectly captures how we all feel right now. You do not need plenty grammar when the man’s achievements already speak for themselves. Messi leaves the national team as their all time highest scorer with an unbelievable 125 goals in 207 appearances.
The decision to leave was not an easy one for the maestro. He actually wrote his farewell letter two days after Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final against Spain. However, the recent passing of his father Jorge in August made him completely certain about stepping away.
Some fans thought he would play forever, but logic tells us that even the best machines need rest. He gave everything to the famous blue and white jersey, bringing endless joy to millions of supporters worldwide. He practically carried the dreams of a whole nation on his shoulders.
Messi now plans to become a super fan just like the rest of us. He promised to keep cheering the younger boys who are stepping up to represent the country. Meanwhile, he still has a running contract with Inter Miami until 2028, so we can still catch his magic at club level.
