The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has raised concerns about the condition of fire tenders in the Ashanti Region, revealing that all the region’s fire engines are currently overaged.
The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DO III Arhin Mensah, disclosed that the region has not received a new fire tender in the past 16 years.
According to him, the ageing fire engines frequently break down during operations, creating challenges for firefighters responding to emergencies.
He warned that the situation places both firefighters and victims at greater risk, particularly during major fires and large-scale disasters.
Fire tenders play a critical role in firefighting operations. When engines break down or fail to reach emergency scenes promptly, the service’s ability to respond effectively can be affected.
The disclosure has highlighted concerns about the need to replace ageing firefighting equipment and improve the operational capacity of the GNFS in the Ashanti Region.
With fires and other emergencies requiring quick responses, reliable fire tenders remain essential to protecting lives and property.
The situation also raises questions about the resources available to firefighters and the support needed to help them carry out their duties safely and effectively.
