Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has emphasised the importance of transparency and public access to economic data, saying citizens are more likely to trust government when they can see and understand the figures guiding national decisions.
He said openness in the management and presentation of economic information allows citizens to assess government performance and demand accountability.
Dr Forson made the remarks in the foreword to the Ghana Statistical Service’s (GSS) Ghana in Numbers 2025 report, published on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
According to him, sound decisions must be based on reliable information rather than assumptions or political opinions.
“When citizens can see the very same figures their leaders use, trust grows and government can be held to account,” he stated.
Ghana in Numbers to be published annually
The Finance Minister explained that the report forms part of efforts to make official statistics more accessible and useful to the public.
He recalled that during the presentation of the 2026 Budget, he announced plans for the GSS to introduce a flagship annual publication that would tell Ghana’s national story through data.
Dr Forson said the Ghana in Numbers report fulfils that commitment and will be published every year.
He encouraged students, teachers, traders, farmers, public officers and other citizens to read and use the publication to better understand the country’s development.
Strengthening Ghana’s statistical system
The Minister also linked the publication to wider reforms aimed at improving the quality and reliability of Ghana’s national statistics.
These include the rebasing of national income and consumer price figures, alongside other improvements to the country’s statistical system.
He said the reforms would provide a stronger evidence base for policymaking and help government make better-informed decisions.
Dr Forson commended the Government Statistician, the management and staff of the GSS, and the institution’s Board for their work in producing the report.
He maintained that economic decisions should be guided by evidence and encouraged Ghanaians to engage with the figures as part of the country’s development process.
The Ghana in Numbers 2025 report is expected to provide citizens with an accessible overview of the country’s economic and social indicators.
