Authorities Restore Order in Benso After Violent Clash Between Community Youth and Forestry Officials

The Western Central Regional Police Command has successfully restored calm in Benso, a community located in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, following a violent disturbance on June 7, 2026. The clash between community youth and forestry officials left two people injured, with one victim sustaining serious gunshot wounds.

Trouble began when a local resident, Prosper Kwame Eshun, engaged in a heated dispute with forestry officers stationed at their workers’ bungalow. Reports indicate the conflict started over a parked motorcycle that allegedly obstructed access to the Forestry Commission office.

While initial claims suggested a simple misunderstanding over a motorbike, the situation escalated rapidly into a large-scale confrontation. Witnesses describe a mob of over 100 individuals who descended upon the commission office to demand the return of confiscated equipment.

The resulting violence led to significant property damage, including smashed vehicle windscreens and vandalized storage facilities. Police confirmed that during the chaos, 43-year-old George Adu suffered gunshot wounds, and both he and Eshun are currently receiving medical care.

Maintaining peace requires a collaborative approach between traditional authorities, local assembly members, and government security agencies. Constructive dialogue remains the only viable path to resolve disagreements before they turn into public safety crises.

The Western Central Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting life and property throughout the municipality. They continue to conduct investigations to ensure those responsible for the vandalism and assault face the appropriate legal consequences.

We encourage all residents to use established grievance procedures rather than resorting to mob violence. Respecting the law is essential for the sustainable development of the Tarkwa area and the safety of every citizen.
