Our beloved Black Queens have finally done it again. The senior national womens team survived a very tough Group D battle after playing out a tense draw with Mali today. The girls played their hearts out on the pitch in Morocco and gave Ghanaians every reason to smile. This massive result officially guarantees their place in the next stage of the ongoing Women Africa Cup of Nations.
Nobody said the journey was going to be an easy one. Mali brought their full strength and physicality to the game because they also needed a victory to stay in the competition. However our the Black Queens held their ground firmly from start to finish. Coach Kim Bjorkegren deserves some serious applause for setting up a solid tactical plan that frustrated the Malians all night.
Now all attention shifts to the very crucial quarter final encounter against Malawi. The Malawians recently topped their group and they are definitely not a team we can easily joke with. The stakes are much higher now because a victory over Malawi will take the Queens straight to the semi finals. Reaching the semi finals automatically qualifies Ghana for the upcoming FIFA Women World Cup in Brazil.
The Black Queens players are currently in very high spirits and the entire nation stands solidly behind them. We have missed the global stage for way too long since our last appearance many years ago. It is time for Doris Boaduwaa and the rest of the squad to shine bright and make history. Let us all continue praying for the team as they prepare to face Malawi in this defining moment of their careers.
