Ghana’s senior women national team has once again proven that true champions never give up easily when faced with tough pressure. The Black Queens delivered a stunning performance at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca to defeat fierce rivals Côte d’Ivoire 2-1. This crucial victory successfully keeps their precious 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification dream alive. Football fans across the country can finally breathe a heavy sigh of relief after a very tense encounter.
The match started on a very difficult note when the Lady Elephants secured an early penalty just four minutes into the game. Ines Konan stepped up confidently and put the Ivorians ahead to rattle our nerves. Trailing a goal down in such a high stakes playoff match could easily break any young squad. However our resilient ladies maintained their focus and pushed hard to turn the tables around.
Head coach Kim Björkegren rallied the squad during the interval and the response after the break was simply magical. Brilliant forward Princess Marfo rose to the occasion in the fifty ninth minute to score a fantastic equalizer. The stadium erupted as the Black Queens brought the score level and swung the momentum firmly in their favour. You could literally feel the renewed energy pulsing through every single player on the pitch.
The pressure eventually paid off again when referee whistle blew for a penalty in favor of Ghana in the seventy second minute. Germany based defender Josephine Bonsu kept her cool under immense pressure and slotted the ball neatly into the net. That brilliant strike completed a famous comeback and sealed the vital two to one victory. The hard fought win moves the team forward into the upcoming inter confederation playoffs scheduled for later this year.
The journey to Brazil 2027 is still very long and demanding but our ladies have crossed this major hurdle with pride. They will prepare rigorously for the upcoming playoff stages in December with strong hopes of securing a historic World Cup ticket. Let us continue supporting the Black Queens as they fly the Ghanaian flag high on the international football stage.
