Early this morning, disaster struck the busy Otumfuo Roundabout at Kejetia when a speeding driver lost total control of his steering wheel.

The out-of-control vehicle veered straight onto the pavement where two homeless citizens were fast asleep, completely unaware of the looming danger. Instead of stopping safely, the car crushed their legs in a flash, leaving the victims crying out in agonizing pain. Onlookers around the bustling transport terminal rushed to rescue the victims and managed to pull them out from under the heavy tyres.

The urgent rescue and medical response

Good Samaritans at the scene immediately called for an ambulance while dealing with the heavy shock of the sudden accident. Emergency medical teams arrived shortly after to administer first aid before rushing the injured persons to a nearby hospital for urgent care. Police personnel also showed up quickly to control the massive crowd of angry onlookers who gathered to catch a glimpse of the bloody mess. Authorities have since towed the mangled vehicle away to clear the blocked lane and ease the heavy morning traffic gridlock.

Safety concerns for pavement sleepers

This sad incident brings back the painful conversation about streetism and the severe dangers vulnerable people face sleeping on Kumasi pavements. Many homeless individuals exposed to the harsh elements of the street now have to worry about reckless drivers endangering their lives at night. Local transport workers are now calling on city authorities to enforce strict traffic rules around Kejetia to prevent such avoidable madness. We pray the injured victims recover fully from this terrible ordeal as police continue their investigations into the reckless driver’s whereabouts.
