Chris Pappas has made history in the United States after winning the New Hampshire Senate race, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the US Senate.
The Democratic congressman defeated Republican candidate and former US Senator John E. Sununu in the November 3, 2026 election.
Pappas celebrated his victory at an election-night gathering in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he addressed supporters and thanked those who stood by him throughout the campaign.
One of the emotional moments of his speech came when he acknowledged his husband, Vann Bentley, who stood beside him.
“I want to thank the guy next to me, my amazing husband Vann,” Pappas said, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.
He went on to express his appreciation for their relationship, saying he considered himself fortunate regardless of the outcome because he was married to a man he loved.
Pappas also thanked his supporters, campaign team and volunteers for their commitment throughout the election campaign.
A historic moment for US politics
At 46, Pappas becomes the first openly gay man elected to serve in the United States Senate, marking a significant moment in the country’s political history.
He previously represented New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District in the US House of Representatives, first winning election to Congress in 2018.
His victory also keeps the Senate seat in Democratic hands following the retirement of Senator Jeanne Shaheen.
Pappas will now prepare to take up his new role in the Senate, where he is expected to represent New Hampshire and participate in national legislative debates.
His election has attracted attention beyond the state, particularly because of its historic significance for LGBTQ representation in American politics.
The victory marks a new chapter in Pappas’ political career and adds his name to the history of the United States Senate.
