The Accra High Court is expected to deliver its ruling on Chairman Wontumi’s application for bail pending appeal on November 4, following his conviction and reported 20-year prison sentence for illegal mining-related offences.
The case concerns mining activities linked to a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
Chairman Wontumi, also known as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is seeking bail while he pursues an appeal against his conviction and sentence.
Bail pending appeal allows a convicted person to seek temporary release while challenging a court’s decision. The court must consider the application before deciding whether the person can be released during the appeal process.
The November 4 ruling will determine whether Wontumi is granted bail while his appeal proceeds.
The case has attracted public attention because of its connection to illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and the legal consequences associated with mining offences in Ghana.
Illegal mining remains a major national concern due to its impact on water bodies, forests and farmlands.
The court’s decision on the bail application will be a separate matter from the substantive appeal challenging the conviction and sentence.
Until the court delivers its ruling, Wontumi’s request for bail remains pending.
