Ghana’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority is introducing a high-tech digital vehicle number plate system to end plate cloning and registration fraud. Speaking on JoyNews on July 24, 2026, DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey revealed that the system will feature embedded Radio Frequency Identification chips to keep every car safe across the country.
This massive digital upgrade gives car owners real peace of mind by making illegal embossing and vehicle theft nearly impossible for criminals to pull off.
Under the new system, DVLA will produce all number plates through one centralized facility linked directly to its digital database. Each smart plate will share real time vehicle information with the Ghana Police Service, National Insurance Commission, Ghana Highway Authority, and the judiciary.
Connecting vehicle records directly to law enforcement agencies speeds up criminal investigations and road safety checks. Security officers can scan plates instantly on the highway to confirm genuine ownership details and active insurance coverage.
Phone Verification Stops Registration Fraud Dead In Its Tracks
To prevent unauthorized registrations by crooked middle agents, DVLA has introduced mandatory phone verification into the digital registration process. Whenever an agent registers a car on behalf of an owner, the system sends a unique verification code directly to the owner’s mobile phone before completing the setup.
Car owners who registered vehicles before 2023 must migrate their records onto the new digital platform immediately. Completing your digital onboarding early ensures you can easily participate in the upcoming nationwide re-registration process without facing unnecessary delays.
Rollout Timetable For Pilot Testing And Nationwide Registration
DVLA will launch a pilot testing phase in August 2026 starting strictly with government-owned vehicles. Registration for newly purchased, unregistered vehicles begins on September 1, 2026, while the nationwide re-registration exercise for existing vehicle owners runs from January 1, 2027, to December 31, 2028.
