The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has achieved a massive diplomatic breakthrough on the continental stage regarding the protection of citizen investments abroad. The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has officially declared its total backing for Ghana’s formal petition submitted to the African Union.
This major sub-regional endorsement provides a heavy boost to the continuous advocacy efforts of the country against targeted xenophobic violence. The unified position sends a very powerful message to all African nations that the West African bloc will no longer look away while its people suffer.
Minister Ablakwa Confirms Endorsement After Sierra Leone Meetings
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, broke the exciting development through an official social media announcement on Sunday, July 19, 2026. The strategic deal went through after intense ministerial sessions held in Sierra Leone ahead of the main summit for heads of state.
Ablakwa strongly commended his regional colleagues for showing true Pan-African brotherhood by endorsing the protest document without any tough conditions. He reaffirmed that the government is actively working to actualize the historical vision of our first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who dreamed of a completely united and tolerant continent.
The original petition to the African Union leadership stems from a deeply serious ongoing humanitarian crisis inside Southern Africa. Ghana formally sent an official protest letter dated May 6, 2026, urging the continental body to classify the matter as an item of urgent continental interest.
The state raised massive alarms concerning the painful loss of innocent migrant lives, the absolute destruction of foreign businesses, and the constant harassment faced by trading citizens. These recurring Afrophobic attacks violate the fundamental rules contained inside the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, making it a matter that requires immediate political intervention.
Beyond the fight against physical violence, the ECOWAS council gave an unconditional endorsement to the Accra Next Steps Commitments on Reparatory Justice. This means West African nations are now legally aligned to demand formal compensation and structural fixes for historical and modern injustices.
This double victory at the ministerial level will structurally strengthen Ghana’s voice during upcoming negotiations at the African Union headquarters. Logically, you cannot preach continental unity during high-level meetings while ordinary African citizens face physical danger when they cross borders to do genuine business.
The foreign ministry warned that allowing targeted violence against fellow Africans directly destroys the economic foundation of the African Continental Free Trade Area. The trade agreement can only succeed when entrepreneurs can travel, live, and invest in any country without fearing for their basic survival.
With the full support of the fifteen ECOWAS member states securely locked in, Ghana holds a very strong diplomatic hand going forward. Ordinary travelers and international business operators can look forward to tighter security measures as the African Union prepares to debate this urgent regional petition.
