The conversation surrounding the administration of justice in our country has taken a very interesting turn following a major speech by a top political leader. The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly criticized the passage of the new Tribunals Bill.
He argues that the state does not need to create a whole new parallel system of justice to resolve existing delays. This public rejection has sparked intense logical arguments between major political actors and civil society groups regarding the best way to make our legal system fast and fair for the ordinary Ghanaian citizen.
Addressing the general public on Sunday, July 19, 2026, the Vice President clearly stated his opposition to the new law. He acknowledged that our current conventional courts face massive challenges, especially regarding extreme congestion and slow case management.
However, Dr Bawumia thinks that setting up separate special tribunals is a wrong move that ignores our historical past. He reminded citizens about the old historical tribunals, dropping a subtle hint that Ghanaians still remember the controversial things done in their name during previous eras.
The economist turned politician believes the ultimate solution to slow justice is to modernize the primary court systems we already have on the ground. He explained that instead of wasting state cash to build a secondary judicial network, the government should invest heavily in expanding existing judicial infrastructure.
Dr Bawumia stated that hiring more qualified judges and building extra courtrooms will automatically reduce the heavy burden on the legal system. He insists that the state must double down on upgrading current facilities rather than inventing new legal shortcuts.
As a well known champion of national digitalization, the NPP leader heavily emphasizes that technology can fix the administrative failures inside our judiciary. By utilizing electronic filing systems and digital case tracking, the courts can process lawsuits much faster without human interference.
This digital strategy aims to eliminate the massive stacks of paperwork that slow down investigations and delay judgements. Logically, fixing a leaking pipe in your main house makes more sense than building a temporary plastic tank outside to collect the waste.
The passage of the Tribunals Bill has created a very deep division between the majority and minority sides inside Parliament. The majority group defends the bill, arguing that special tribunals will quickly clear specific minor cases and reduce the heavy load on conventional judges.
On the other side, the minority members agree completely with Dr Bawumia’s position, insisting that the state must focus solely on improving the capacity of our regular courts. As the heated national debate continues to look for a permanent solution, every ordinary citizen hopes for a legal system that delivers true justice without long delays.
