Bawumia provides rescue supplies to flood victims on June 29

The conversation surrounding the rainy season in Accra always brings a lot of deep frustration. Residents in low-lying areas constantly worry about losing their hard-earned properties whenever dark clouds gather over the capital.

This familiar nightmare became reality on Monday, June 29, 2026, when torrential rains inundated several communities across the Greater Accra Region. The devastating floods displaced thousands of citizens, destroyed homes, and caused a painful loss of lives and livelihood.

Families in the worst-hit areas watched helplessly as their businesses vanished under the heavy waters. It is a highly stressful situation that leaves many wondering how they can ever rebuild their lives from scratch.

To help ease this massive burden, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, personally visited the affected communities. He walked through the areas to observe the extent of the structural damage and interact directly with the victims.

Following his field assessment, the Vice President quickly organized essential relief items to support the families as they recover from the disaster. The donations were presented to the affected residents on his behalf by his Advisor on Gender and Social Protection, Akosua Asaa Manu.

It is quite comforting to see leadership show up on the ground when citizens are facing their darkest moments. These emergency items will provide immediate comfort to households that lost basic necessities like food and bedding during the storm.

While these donations bring a big sigh of relief to the victims, we must look at the long term logic of urban safety. Giving out blankets and food items is a wonderful gesture, but it cannot stop the next heavy downpour from causing chaos.

The state needs to ensure that the ongoing military-led flood mitigation exercises and drainage expansions are fully completed without political interference. Our ultimate desire as citizens is to sleep soundly through the night whenever it rains.

For now, the affected families can lean on this timely support from the NPP flagbearer to start their recovery process. Let us keep supporting our neighbors and working together to build a more resilient and flood-free capital.
