Ghana Automotive Industry Wins Big as Global Investors Rush for Local Car Assembly

Buying a brand new car in Ghana is about to become much easier and more affordable. The Ghana Partnership for Jobs and Economic Transformation Programme reveals that our local automotive sector is gaining massive interest from global manufacturing investors.

The Team Lead of Ghana JET, Eugene T Sangmortey, shared these exciting developments during the 2026 Citi Business Festival in Accra. He explained that a solid national automotive policy has successfully positioned Ghana as the primary vehicle manufacturing hub for the West African sub region.

Moving Past Simple Vehicle Assembly to Large Scale Local Production

Ghana has already made incredible progress by attracting top international car brands to set up local assembly plants. However, the industrial sector is now moving into a critical growth phase focused on scaling up production and increasing local value addition.

Mr. Sangmortey noted that while we have successfully gotten one foot in the door, the next step involves expanding factory capacities. To make this a reality, a Ghanaian factory in Kumasi is set to begin the local production of certified industrial fasteners like bolts, nuts, and springs in the third quarter of 2026 to supply the assembly lines.

Massive Investor Confidence Boosted by Strong Policy Foundations

The impressive growth of the car industry is not a historical accident. The team disclosed that the programme directly engaged with more than four hundred major investors during its early developmental stages.

This UK Government funded initiative supports systemic transformation and sustainable job creation across our manufacturing sectors. The clear regulatory framework gives global automotive companies the long term confidence to invest their capital directly into the Ghanaian economy.

Real Economic Benefits for Local Workers and Car Buyers

Sustaining this manufacturing boom will bring massive advantages to ordinary citizens through industrialization and skilled job creation. Instead of relying heavily on expensive imported used cars, Ghanaians will soon have access to affordable, locally manufactured vehicles.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Trade is currently finalizing an automotive component policy to encourage local spare parts production. This strategic move will protect buyers from uncertified parts and cement Ghana’s position as the leading automotive marketplace under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
