Ghana Banking Sector Recovers As Bad Loans Decline Fast

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has announced significant financial improvements across the country’s banking sector. Speaking at the 131st Monetary Policy Committee press conference on Wednesday, July 23, 2026, he revealed that total banking assets grew by 30.7 percent to reach GH¢502.4 billion.

These encouraging financial updates bring welcome relief to business owners and individuals who want a strong, reliable banking system to support their daily trade.

Ghanaian banks saw their Non-Performing Loan ratio drop significantly to 16.1 percent in June 2026, down from 23.1 percent in June 2025. Additionally, the Capital Adequacy Ratio rose to 20.4 percent, showing that financial institutions hold stronger capital reserves to cushion unexpected losses.

While high credit risk remains a key vulnerability, strict adherence to central bank regulatory guidelines will continue to protect public savings. Healthier balance sheets allow commercial banks to expand credit access and support local business growth.

Ghana’s trade surplus reached US$8.8 billion in the first half of 2026, driven by higher revenues from gold and cocoa exports. Consequently, Gross International Reserves reached US$12.9 billion, providing an adequate buffer equivalent to 5.0 months of import cover.

Although Middle East geopolitical conflicts raised global energy prices and increased import bills, our foreign reserves remain strong enough to absorb external economic shocks. The central bank kept the policy rate at 14 percent to maintain price stability while encouraging sustainable economic growth.
