Ghana has officially entered into a significant Visa Waiver Agreement with South Korea, specifically benefiting holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports.
Announced on Monday, June 1, 2026, this move marks a milestone in bilateral relations, representing the first agreement of its kind between the two nations in nearly 50 years.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that negotiations are currently underway to extend these visa-free travel privileges to holders of Ordinary Passports. This initiative follows a successful working visit by President John Dramani Mahama to South Korea earlier this year in March.

How does the new Ghana-Korea agreement improve diplomacy?
The agreement was signed by Minister Ablakwa and his South Korean counterpart, H.E. Cho Hyun, during the ongoing Africa-Korea Foreign Ministers Meeting. By simplifying travel for government and service officials, the pact aims to streamline high-level cooperation and foster deeper political ties between Accra and Seoul.
This diplomatic breakthrough is part of a broader commitment to delivering on key priorities established during recent bilateral meetings. While currently limited to specific passport holders, the long-term goal of bringing Ordinary Passport holders on board reflects a shared vision for enhanced connectivity.
Ghana’s ability to secure these international agreements highlights the increasing global demand for Ghanaian professionals. Whether through healthcare workers or educational staff, the country is actively positioning itself as a key provider of skilled labor on the world stage.
The success of these initiatives demonstrates the effectiveness of sustained diplomatic engagement. By prioritizing both regional cooperation in the Caribbean and strategic partnerships in East Asia, Ghana is successfully expanding its international footprint while fostering tangible benefits for its citizens.
