Google has unveiled a new artificial intelligence feature for Google Photos called “Video Remix,” allowing users to edit and transform videos within seconds using the company’s latest Gemini Omni AI model.
Announced on Wednesday, the new tool is designed to simplify video editing by enabling users to apply advanced visual effects with just a few taps, eliminating the need for dedicated editing software.
The launch marks another step in Google’s efforts to integrate generative AI across its consumer products as competition intensifies with rivals including Apple, OpenAI, and Adobe.
AI-Powered Video Editing
The Video Remix feature is available through the Create tab in Google Photos and uses Gemini Omni, Google’s recently introduced multimodal AI model. According to Google, the model is capable of creating and transforming content from virtually any type of input.
With Video Remix, users can quickly apply a variety of AI-generated enhancements to their videos. The tool can automatically brighten dark footage through cinematic relighting, replace ordinary backgrounds with entirely new scenes, and apply artistic visual styles inspired by traditional art techniques.
Google says the editing process takes only seconds, making advanced video effects accessible to everyday users without requiring professional editing experience.
Multiple Creative Effects
The new feature offers several creative editing options.
Users can add cinematic lighting effects that recreate different times of day, such as a warm morning glow or dramatic evening lighting. The AI can also replace simple backgrounds with more visually appealing environments, allowing videos to appear as though they were filmed in completely different locations.
In addition, Video Remix includes artistic filters that transform ordinary footage into stylized works of art. Available styles include watercolor, raw sketchbook, and oil painting effects.
For example, a user could make a video appear as if it was recorded inside a greenhouse, enhance the lighting for a more cinematic look, or convert an ordinary recording into a watercolor-style animation.
Expanding Google’s AI Ecosystem
The introduction of Video Remix reflects Google’s broader strategy of embedding generative AI into its most widely used applications.
Rather than requiring users to rely on separate video editing software, Google is integrating creative AI tools directly into Google Photos, making advanced editing features more accessible while encouraging users to remain within the company’s ecosystem.
