The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has called on officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to fully support the implementation of the Automated Fire Safety Compliance System (AFCAS), describing digital transformation as essential to building a modern, efficient, and accountable fire service.
Speaking at a workshop held at the Fire Academy and Training School in Accra, the Minister said AFCAS represents a major step toward improving fire safety compliance, streamlining inspections, and strengthening public confidence in the operations of the Fire Service.
The workshop brought together members of the Strategic Management Committee, Regional Fire Commanders, and officers from across the country as part of ongoing efforts to prepare personnel for the nationwide rollout of the digital platform.
Launched in February 2026, AFCAS replaces the traditional manual fire safety compliance process with a fully digital system that enables real-time tracking of inspections, certification, and compliance activities. The platform is expected to improve coordination among fire officers, reduce delays in processing approvals, and identify high-risk facilities more quickly.
Addressing participants, Hon. Muntaka acknowledged that introducing a new technology often comes with challenges but urged officers to remain committed to making the system successful.
“Every new system comes with challenges, but continuous shaping will shape the system,” he said.
He encouraged personnel to embrace the platform, stressing that its success depends largely on the cooperation and commitment of officers responsible for implementing it.
“With your support and commitment, AFCAS will work as expected to improve the work of the Service, and that will also benefit you, the officers,” the Minister stated.
Hon. Muntaka emphasized that digitalization is no longer optional for public institutions seeking to improve service delivery. According to him, relying on outdated manual processes limits efficiency and makes it difficult to respond quickly to emerging challenges.
He noted that modern technology will allow the Ghana National Fire Service to deliver faster services, improve record management, and strengthen accountability throughout the fire safety inspection process.
The Minister also linked the successful implementation of AFCAS to the welfare of fire officers. He explained that an efficient digital system could generate additional revenue for the Service, reducing its dependence on government funding while creating opportunities to improve working conditions for personnel.
“When you support AFCAS and it succeeds, it will improve your work and welfare,” he told participants.
Acknowledging the financial constraints facing the government, Hon. Muntaka encouraged officers to think creatively about sustainable ways to generate revenue that would support the Service’s long-term development.
Chief Fire Officer Madam Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong also addressed the gathering, describing AFCAS as a transformative initiative that will modernize fire safety regulation across the country.
She said the success of the digital platform depends on the active participation of officers at every level of the organization and urged personnel to support its implementation.
According to Madam Ntow Sarpong, the previous manual system presented several operational challenges, including delays, fragmented inspections, and inefficient record-keeping.
She explained that AFCAS will simplify interactions with the public, improve coordination among inspection teams, and provide real-time monitoring of compliance across businesses, institutions, and public facilities.
The Chief Fire Officer added that nationwide implementation of the system would not only strengthen fire prevention efforts but also enhance service delivery for citizens while improving operational efficiency within the Ghana National Fire Service.
The workshop forms part of a broader engagement programme aimed at preparing commanders and frontline officers for the transition to a technology-driven fire safety compliance regime.
Government officials believe the successful implementation of AFCAS will significantly improve Ghana’s fire safety framework by increasing transparency, speeding up regulatory processes, and ensuring that fire safety standards are consistently enforced nationwide.
As the Ghana National Fire Service continues its digital transformation journey, authorities remain optimistic that the new platform will strengthen public safety while positioning the Service to meet the growing demands of a modern emergency response system.
