Majority Leader James Agalga has emphasised the importance of press freedom, describing a free press as a pillar of democracy that must be protected rather than treated as a nuisance.

In a statement highlighting the role of the media, Agalga said: “Free press is not a nuisance to be managed, but a pillar to be protected.”

His remarks underscore the importance of allowing journalists and media organisations to operate freely and perform their duties without unnecessary interference.

A free press plays a significant role in informing the public, holding public officials accountable and providing a platform for different opinions on national issues.

Journalists also help citizens understand government policies, public spending and decisions that affect their daily lives.

Protecting press freedom is therefore important to strengthening transparency, accountability and public participation in a democratic society.

However, press freedom also comes with responsibilities, including accuracy, fairness, ethical reporting and respect for the rights of others.

Agalga’s statement draws attention to the need to protect the media’s role in society and recognise its contribution to democratic governance.

The quote also reinforces the broader principle that journalists should be able to carry out their work in the public interest while adhering to professional standards.

The protection of press freedom remains an important issue in democratic societies, where access to reliable information and open public debate help citizens make informed decisions.
