The ongoing national war against illegal mining has recorded its biggest judicial shockwave yet. An Accra High Court has officially convicted the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The prominent political figure and his firm, Akonta Mining, were found guilty of multiple illegal mining offenses at his Samreboi concession in the Western Region. The court handed down a massive 20 year prison sentence, shaking up the political landscape and sending a strong message across the country.
The historic ruling took place on Monday, July 20, 2026, under tense legal atmosphere. The lead counsel for the politician, Atta Akyea, tried to secure a postponement by claiming his client was out of the jurisdiction until July 22.
However, the presiding judge, Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, firmly rejected the request, noting that both sides previously agreed on the judgment date. The court also dismissed an application to refer specific constitutional questions to the Supreme Court, choosing to move forward with the sentencing due to the heavy nature of the environmental damage.
Reacting to the shocking judicial outcome, the Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Ken Ashigbey, expressed satisfaction but noted that the punishment could have been even tougher. He stated openly to journalists that he wished the judge gave Wontumi the maximum 25 year sentence alongside a massive financial penalty.
Despite wishing for a heavier sentence, Ashigbey highly commended the presiding judge for showing immense courage in handling such a high-profile political case. He also praised the Attorney-General and the former Lands Minister for standing firm against corporate illegality when the investigation started.
The anti-galamsey coalition leader emphasized that this landmark conviction must only serve as the beginning of a total cleanup exercise. He reminded the public about the famous Professor Frimpong-Boateng report, which explicitly named several politically exposed persons involved in mining illegalities.
Ashigbey logically argued that many District Chief Executives, Municipal Chief Executives, and traditional chiefs remain heavily complicit in destroying our fresh water bodies. He stated that the state must show the same energy in prosecuting every big man parading the corridors of power with illegal mining riches.
This unprecedented judgment marks a massive turning point in our national history, proving that no individual is above environmental protection laws. For years, ordinary citizens complained that only poor laboratory laborers were being jailed while the wealthy financiers walked away completely free.
With a whole ruling party regional chairman heading to jail for two decades, the legal precedent is now crystal clear. The general public is waiting to see if the state will maintain this aggressive legal momentum to permanently save our forests and rivers from total destruction.
