Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its objections to Emelia Afi Agbenyo’s appointment as Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC).
According to Kwakye Ofosu, the NPP is not in a strong position to criticise the appointment, arguing that the party appointed people affiliated with it to independent state institutions during its time in government.
He maintained that no political party had filled independent institutions with party members more than the NPP, pushing back against the party’s concerns about Agbenyo’s appointment.
The comments have added to the debate surrounding political appointments and the independence of state institutions in Ghana.
The Electoral Commission plays a crucial role in organising and supervising elections. Its leadership and appointments often attract public attention because of the importance of maintaining confidence in the electoral process.
The debate has renewed calls for transparency and public scrutiny of appointments to independent institutions, particularly where questions of political affiliation arise.
