President John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger cooperation between Africa and Russia in the energy sector, identifying electricity supply as a major challenge to the continent’s development.
Speaking at the Third Russia–Africa Summit in Moscow, President Mahama said inadequate access to reliable electricity remains a significant obstacle to Africa’s progress.
He highlighted Russia’s experience in renewable energy and nuclear power, saying cooperation in these areas could deliver practical benefits for African countries.
“One major obstacle to Africa’s progress is the lack of adequate electric power,” Mahama said, adding that energy cooperation between Russia and Africa could help address the challenge.
Putin Signals Russia’s Readiness to Expand Nuclear Cooperation
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed Russia’s readiness to expand nuclear energy cooperation with African countries.
Putin made the remarks during discussions with President Mahama in Moscow, where the two leaders explored opportunities to strengthen energy cooperation between Ghana and Russia.
The discussions come as Ghana continues to explore options for meeting its long-term electricity needs, including the possible development of a nuclear power station.
Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company, Rosatom, is a potential partner in discussions concerning nuclear power development. However, further details on specific agreements, financing arrangements and implementation timelines would be needed to establish the next steps.
Ghana-Russia Energy Partnership
The engagement forms part of broader efforts to strengthen economic and technical relations between Ghana and Russia.
Potential cooperation in nuclear energy could involve technical expertise, infrastructure development and the training of specialists, depending on the agreements reached by both countries.
For Ghana, any move towards nuclear power would require careful consideration of financing, safety regulations, waste management, technical capacity and long-term operating costs.
The discussions also highlight the broader importance of diversifying energy sources to support industrial development, investment and reliable electricity supply.
Although the two leaders have expressed interest in expanding cooperation, the details of any specific nuclear energy project will depend on subsequent discussions and formal agreements.
